„Russenbrezel“ – Memory of childhood days!
This Swabian specialty is a sweet and crunchy dry pastry, that tastes particularly good with a hot cup of coffee, tea or cocoa - even after 2 or 3 days!
Our Russian pretzels are freshly made in a traditional Swabian bakery according to a well-known recipe: with lots of love, one by one by hand, several times a week.
They are made with carefully selected ingredients. Strips of dark chocolate shortpastry and light puff pastry are intertwined and then formed into a pretzel. After baking, it is coated with icing and rolled in roasted almond flakes.
Many Swabians know this pastry from their childhood and are still happy about it today.
But where does the name „Russenbrezel“ come from?
(Sometimes it is also called „Olgabrezel“)
Probably it will no longer be clear which Stuttgart “sugar baker” invented the Russian pretzel, but it is documented that the name goes back to Queen Olga of Württemberg – and so the trail leads to Russia.
1822, Olga was born in St. Petersburg, daugther of Tzar Nikolai I. and his wife Charlotte of Prussia. Due to a long-standing connection between the "House of Württemberg" and the "House of Ramonow", the wedding of the Tzar's daughter and Karl, the hear to the Württemberg throne was celebrated in St. Petersburg in 1846. In 1864 she was crowned Queen of Württemberg and supported nummerous social projects early on - the Olgahospital in Stuttgart still exists today (lovingly called „Olgäle“ by the Swabians)!
So it's no wonder that such a delicious pastry was created in honor of a queen who was so popular because she was so charitable!
